a book about girl power and bling

The Necklace by Cheryl Jarvis

They say that diamonds are a girl's best friend. That diamonds represent wealth and class in our society is without question. But the saying also denotes superficiality and greed. The Necklace by Cheryl Jarvis gives a whole new meaning to diamonds as a status symbol. This true story talks about thirteen women who decide to buy a diamond necklace and share it. In the end the idea of sharing inspires the women to give back to their community. They also gain the valuable gift of friendship. For the most part the book was easy and entertaining, although a bit repetitive--I started skimming about the women's lives towards the end. Jarvis tried to show the diversity of the women, but her descriptions of them were so similar it was hard to differentiate between them. I guess I'm fascinated with the idea of time sharing an exhorbitantly expensive piece of jewelry, and that was enough to get me to read it, but after that I would have to say (or hope) there are better books out there about friendship and what can be achieved with a little motivation. Did you read it? Let me know what you thought.
