Top Ten Tuesdays: Words/Topics that Make me Instantly Pick up a Book

Another Top Ten List brought to you by the librarians at MPL! For more lists (by others) on this topic, visit The Broke and the Bookish.

Today's topic is top ten topics/words that make me pick up/buy a book/ borrow from library.

1. Leandros or Dresden or Kate Daniels--Three series I am obsessed with.  I am buying the next in the series the day it comes out.

2. The word Dystopia makes me borrow books from the library. Post-apocalyptic falls into this same category.

3. Zombies!!!!  They want to eat your brains! And I want to read about them.
4. Edgar Awards- These awards are given to mystery books. There are many categories but the ones I pay special attention to are first novel by an American author and best young adult.
5. Tolkien in another key word. Tolkien is considered by some to be the founding father of modern fantasy. When a book has inspired by or in the tradition of Tolkien in the description I tend to read it.
6. Here there be Dragons.--I read plenty of dragon fiction. The more talking the dragon does the better.
7. Knitting. I Knit and always look through the pattern books for new ideas.
8. Certain Authors-- like Neil Gaiman, Cory Doctorow (thanks for the free stuff on your website Cory!),   Stephanie Pintoff. Also if these authors have comments on other books I am more inclined to try someone new.
9. Locations – Japan, Great Britain, The Tardis

10. Re-tellings of my favorite classics. Alice in Wonderland, Pride and Prejudice, fairy tales, a new take on the books often bring a new appreciation  or understanding of the original.

11. Steampunk!  is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century.

That was 11. Consider it a bonus. What about you? What makes you pick up the next great read? Feel free to tell us below!
